Commander Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch begrudgingly came out to Lancre as part of the intercommunity outreach program to recruit Lancrastians into the City Watch.
Introductory classes on longsword handling (Mind Your Footwork) and dagger defence (How To Not Get Stabbed) were part of the scheduled entertainment and filled up quite quickly. Due to an overwhelming popularity the scheduled four classes were upped to seven by the end of the convention.
The last class, after the closing ceremony, was entitled 'Vimes will teach anyone anything'. The popular demand was unarmed combat, so several joint locks, kicks, punches and throws were taught and executed.
Johan Spruijt-Schuur is a HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) practitioner with a love of The Disc. Most of the material taught in the longsword class was based on Johannes Liechtenauer's* work, a German sword master in the 14th century. The dagger defence was based in a large part on the works of Fiori dei Liberi**, an Italian master of arms from the same period.
