ABOUT THE CONVENTION

So, I hear you ask, what is the Irish Discworld Convention? It’s a gathering of fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series of books, organised by fans. We get together in a hotel for four days every two years (2015 is the 4th Irish DWCon), go to talks, play games and quizzes, watch a talent show, chat to people who share our sense of humour and generally have a great time.

Previous Conventions
If you’ve never been before, you can get a taste of what went on last time here.

Our Guests
We invite Discworld personalities, such as the owners of The Discworld Emporium (the official Ankh-Morpork Consulate) to come and entertain us. Head on over to the guest pages to see the lovely people who agreed to be our guests, including several of Sir Terry’s co-authors.

Our Charities
The Convention is run by a group of fans, who volunteer their spare time to organise every last detail. It’s a not-for-profit event, and we raise money for our chosen charities (The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Barnardos, and the Cork Simon Community - read more about them here) in a variety of way, including a Charity Auction selling an eclectic mix of Discworld merchandise and memorabilia.

Our Attendees
Even more important than the guests and the committee are the host of Irish and international Discworld fans who’ll come together for the Convention. People travel from all over the world, and from down the road. A lot of people come for the first time, alone and confused, not really sure what it’s all about, and they leave with firm friends and a promise to return for the next one. We hope you’ll come and satisfy your curiosity if this is all new to you. And we hope to welcome many of last time’s members back again.

Volunteering
The committee are all volunteers, but we’ll also need volunteers to help us out over the course of the Convention, and in the lead up. If you’d like to help out in any way, please let us know when buying membership. General volunteers, known as Gophers, are always appreciated. We’ll also need a crew of stewards, first aiders and tech heads so if your skills lie in those areas do let us know. Most importantly, make sure you spread the word to friends and family about the Convention! If you’d like any further information, please email info@idwcon.org, or turn up to a Gopher briefing on the Friday or Saturday of the Convention.

How to Contact Us
For all general queries, the best way to get in touch with us is to email info@idwcon.org. If you want to get in touch with other fans who’ll be attending, we have a Facebook group. And if you have a brilliant idea for a programme item you’d like to run, or see if we can run, please email programme@idwcon.org
